About Facelifts

Facelifts are a type of cosmetic surgery that addresses the symptoms of aging in the face and neck. Over the course of one’s life, gravity weakens the soft tissues and suspensory ligaments in the face, as well as increasing skin laxity. This causes sagging skin, overhanging cheek tissue (jowls), and double chins. (1) In response to these symptoms, facelifts are a common cosmetic surgery. They involve removing, repositioning and reinforcing skin, fat and muscle on the face and neck.

There are different types of facelift that improve upon a variety of cosmetic conditions.

Traditional Facelift

For a traditional facelift, a surgeon makes incisions around the hairline, near the ears and under the chin. They remove the skin to reinforce the structure of the face by removing fat and tightening the muscle. They position the skin in accordance with the desired results and then remove the excess skin.

Mini-Facelift

A mini-facelift is best for patients with mild jowls and loose skin. It can also be used as a preventative treatment to slow down the effects of aging. For a mini-facelift, a surgeon makes small incisions around the ear. They lift deep structural tissue and tighten the appearance of the face.

Deep Plane Facelift

A deep plane facelift is a more comprehensive version of a standard facelift. A surgeon will focus more heavily on the muscle and deep tissue, so that the skin will not need to be pulled as tightly as a traditional facelift. This makes for the same tightening structural effect with a more natural look.

Benefits of Facelifts

Facelifts can treat patients with these aesthetic conditions:

  • Loose, sagging facial skin
  • Deep fold lines between the nose and mouth
  • Fat that has lost structural integrity
  • Jowls (sagging skin on cheeks and jaw)
  • Double Chin (excess skin and fat on neck)

Facelifts are powerful tools for treating major structural changes that can make the face look older. There are many ways to deal with loose, drooping skin, but facelifts are unmatched in their ability to restore facial structure. (2)

Who is a Candidate for a Facelift?

An ideal candidate for a facelift will want to tighten their face and neck up, letting their unique beauty shine through once again. If you can relate, then the ideal candidate for a facelift might be you!

If you want a facelift, you should be in relatively good health. It is a highly-involved procedure that requires downtime for recovery, so you need to be able to heal properly. You should also have realistic expectations about what a facelift can do for you. A facelift will improve upon your natural beauty. It can make you look like your younger, healthier self. It cannot, however, change your appearance fundamentally. A facelift aims to correct the aesthetic effects of aging, though it cannot stop the aging process.

Preparation

In preparation for your facelift, we will assess your medical condition to make sure it is safe for you to undergo surgery. We will examine your face and consider your cosmetic goals to plan a personalized procedure.

Once your facelift surgery has been scheduled, we will give you personalized instructions on how to prepare. It is important that you follow these instructions to ensure a safe procedure and a healthy recovery.

We may ask you to stop or start taking certain medications. If you smoke, you should stop before your surgery, and be willing to stop for the duration of your recovery, as smoking can affect your ability to heal.

Facelift Procedure

Your facelift procedure will begin after we administer intravenous sedation or general anesthesia. This will depend on which type of facelift you are receiving and your individual treatment plan. Your surgeon will then make the incisions and proceed to perform the corrective steps to your fat, muscle and skin. They will carefully adjust underlying tissues for a smoother, more youthful look. Once this is complete, they will then close your incisions and wrap your face. You should arrange a ride home for the day of your surgery.

Recovery

Recovery from facelift surgery varies from person to person and depends on how involved the surgery is. You can typically go back to work and resume everyday activity after two weeks. You will experience bruising for several days after your surgery. You may also experience numbing, tingling and itchiness around your incision points for several weeks.

Your doctor will schedule post-operative check ups. They will assess the progress of your recovery and make sure you are healing well. They will give you detailed instructions on how to care for your surgery site during your recovery. It is important that you follow these instructions so you may heal correctly and reduce your recovery time.

Results

You will be able to see the results of your facelift after about two weeks. They will become fully visible as soon as the swelling has gone down. It may take up to three months for your face to feel normal, and for the texture of your skin to appear normal. The incision points of the facelift procedure are often made in discreet locations around the borders of the face, so scarring will be minimal, if at all noticeable.

Corresponding & Complementary Procedures

Blepharoplasty

During a blepharoplasty, or eyelid surgery, excess skin, fat, and muscle are carefully removed or repositioned to create a refreshed and youthful look. Upper eyelid surgery addresses droopy eyelids, while lower eyelid surgery targets puffiness and under-eye bags. By removing these signs of aging, the eyes appear more vibrant, alert, and rejuvenated.

The synergy between a blepharoplasty and facelift allows for a comprehensive approach to facial contouring and anti-aging treatments. This combination ensures that the upper and lower regions of the face are in harmony, creating a more balanced and youthful appearance overall.

Brow Lift

A brow lift, also known as a forehead lift, is a cosmetic surgery procedure designed to address the signs of aging in the brow and forehead area. As we age, our skin gradually loses elasticity, causing the eyebrows to droop and creating frown lines or deep furrows on the forehead. These aging signs can make us appear tired, angry, or older than we feel. A brow lift can be added to a facelift procedure for all-round facial rejuvenation.

Fat Transfer

Fat transfer to the face can often accompany a facelift. It is necessary on occasions where the face has lost substantial tissue volume. During the procedure, the surgeon removes fat from another area of the body, such as the abdomen, then cleans and prepares it for reinjection into the face. Combining facial fat transfer and a facelift ensures that the face retains a youthful fullness.

FAQ

Do facelifts leave scars?

The incisions made during a facelift are made in discreet locations in order to reduce visible scarring as much as possible. They are typically made close to the hairline, near the ears and under the chin. Incisions in these locations work with the natural contours and obscured areas of the face. Scars from a facelift will be more noticeable during recovery. After a year, they should be hard to notice, if not completely negligible.

Are facelifts permanent?

The results of a facelift can remain visible for a decade or more. Unfortunately, the effects of aging are inevitable, and your skin will naturally continue to loosen and sag after your procedure. It is common to receive secondary facelifts some years after the initial procedure.

What is recovery from a facelift like?

Recovery from facelift surgery is minimally uncomfortable. You are advised to stay home and rest until you are fully recovered. You will experience some swelling in your face and neck for several weeks. You may want to stay out of the public eye for 10-14 days. It is normal to return to work two weeks after the surgery. Your doctor will schedule check up appointments to ensure a healthy recovery.
