There is a false stigma that cosmetic surgery is related to vanity and patients should hide it or feel guilty for undergoing it. This is so ridiculous for many reasons. Of course, as an experienced breast reconstructive surgeon, I can certainly understand the importance of reconstruction, especially in patients with cancer, congenital defects, or those who suffered traumatic injury. Not only is this type of plastic surgery extremely important for patients, but truly rewarding for plastic surgeons. However, also as an experienced cosmetic plastic surgeon, I can also share with you the amazing impact on patients of well-performed, cosmetic surgery. Cosmetic surgery, if performed by an experienced, board certified plastic surgeon, on patients with appropriate indications for surgery, usually has a very positive psychological impact. In many patients who undergo cosmetic surgery, for instance with overhanging eyelid skin and eyelid fat bags, it can be a manner of reconstructive surgery for many patients, improving not only cosmetic results, but also functional outcome.
