The joys of motherhood can sometimes be muted by the realization that the process has changed your physical shape. Fat starts to collect in places that it never has before, breasts start to sag, and loose skin develops on the abdomen.

Separate plastic surgery procedures, such as breast enhancement, liposuction, and tummy tuck, can address these areas; however, since they can be performed together, they are often combined to form a Mommy Makeover.

What Are the Benefits of a Mommy Makeover?

Mommy Makeovers are designed to minimize or eliminate the visible effects of pregnancy and breastfeeding and can help you achieve:

  • Fuller and firmer breasts
  • Lifted breast projection
  • A flatter belly
  • A slimmer waist
  • Smoother contours from the breasts to the hips
  • Restored confidence in how you perceive your figure

If you are interested in a Mommy Makeover, contact Dr. Kronowitz by calling (713) 523-0300 to set up a consultation.

Am I a Candidate for a Mommy Makeover?

Mommy Makeover surgery is performed when women are unhappy with their physical body contours after having children. Women who are considering this procedure should not smoke, be close to their ideal weight and have maintained that weight, be in good overall health, and have realistic expectations of their results.

This procedure is designed to minimize or erase the visible effects of pregnancy and childbirth. It is ideal for women who know that they are done having children since any additional pregnancies may revert the changes.

While most women who consider this procedure have experienced childbirth, it is not a prerequisite. Any woman who would like to target these areas can qualify for this combination of surgical techniques, regardless of their parental status. Mommy Makeover surgery is also commonly chosen following significant weight loss to address laxity, hanging skin, and excess fat.

How Is a Mommy Makeover Performed?

Your surgery is designed to fit your needs and goals. Your procedures will be performed simultaneously to reduce surgery and recovery times. Mommy Makeover surgery is performed under general anesthesia.

The time it takes to complete your Mommy Makeover depends on the procedures used during your surgery and the extent of correction needed to produce the desired results. Typically, it takes between three and five hours.

What Are Breast Enhancement Surgeries?

The breasts often develop premature sagging and volume loss after childbirth due to rapid size fluctuations and breastfeeding. Breast enhancement surgery is performed to restore youthfulness and fullness to the breasts. One or multiple breast surgery techniques may be performed depending on your goals and the current condition of your breast.

  • Breast lift surgery elevates sagging breasts by removing excess skin, tightening glandular tissue, and repositioning the nipple. This is commonly chosen by women who wish to restore firmer, perkier breasts.
  • Breast augmentation restores lost volume to the breast by inserting saline or silicone implants. Breast enhancement can also be performed by performing fat transfer to the breasts. This augmentation technique increases fullness without the use of implants. Breast augmentation increases the size and improves the shape of the breasts. It is chosen by women with naturally small breasts or women who have lost volume during the childbearing process.

What Is Liposuction?

Pockets of fat develop and collect in various regions of the body following pregnancy and childbirth, such as the abdomen, hips, thighs, buttocks, and back. Liposuction removes unwanted fatty deposits by suctioning away fat cells. This technique can be applied to unwanted fat nearly anywhere on the body.

A small tube is inserted beneath the skin and into fatty areas, while a powerful medical vacuum is used to remove the excess fat cells. This procedure is less invasive than a tummy tuck and requires only tiny incisions for scars that fade over time to be virtually invisible.

What Else Can Be Included in a Mommy Makeover?

Breast and belly surgeries are most commonly performed in a Mommy Makeover to restore a more youthful figure. However, laxity can also occur on the hips, buttocks, lower back, and thighs.

Additional areas can benefit when the following procedures are included:

  • Thigh lift – To recontour the thighs for a slimmer and smoother appearance using Dr. Kronowitz’s innovative hidden inner thigh incision
  • Lower body lift – To treat loose skin on the hips, buttocks, and lower back
  • Labiaplasty – To tighten a loose or protruding labia often caused or worsened by childbirth

Even though these procedures are not commonly considered to be a part of the Mommy Makeover, they can be beneficial for specific candidates.

What Is a Tummy Tuck?

During pregnancy, the uterus enlarges to accommodate your growing baby, resulting in stretched-out skin around the belly and weakened abdominal muscles. A tummy tuck smooths and sculpts the midsection by removing excess skin and fat, and by tightening loose or separated abdominal muscles.

In addition to creating a slimmer, more contoured abdomen, a tummy tuck can correct diastasis recti (the physical separation of the abdominal muscles) and improve the appearance of unsightly C-section scars. This can be accomplished by incorporating the C-section scar into the tummy tuck scar. When performed by a plastic surgeon, the resulting mark is far less noticeable.

What Will My Mommy Makeover Recovery Be Like?

The Mommy Makeover is an outpatient procedure. Therefore, you can return home to start your recovery period within a few hours of the surgery. You will need to have someone present to drive you home and stay with you for one to two days to help with household chores, cooking, and childcare.

Compression garments may be wrapped around all treated areas to protect the incisions and increase blood circulation. These garments will also help control bruising, swelling, and soreness. Additionally, you will be given a prescription for pain medication to handle any post-operative discomfort.

Because this surgery addresses multiple areas, you should expect to take up to two weeks off of work; however, non-strenuous day-to-day activities may be able to be resumed before that. Avoid any vigorous exercise or heavy lifting for at least six weeks.

How Painful Will My Mommy Makeover Recovery Be?

You are likely to experience some discomfort, including tenderness at the incision sites, nausea due to the effects of anesthesia, and overall soreness. Pain will subside over the first few days and can be controlled with medication.

Will I Have Scars After My Mommy Makeover?

All of the techniques used in this comprehensive surgical procedure are invasive and require incisions. Therefore, there will be scars. Fortunately, these scars are placed in inconspicuous locations and plastic surgeons are trained on advanced ways of closing incisions to help with postoperative scarring.

While there is no way to prevent scars, you can help minimize their appearance by keeping the healing incisions out of the sun (which can darken their pigment) and not returning to physical activity too soon (which can separate and widen the incisions). Additionally, topical scar treatments can be applied once the incisions have closed and healed. No one wants to have a scar; however, most women have reported that the scars are worthwhile trade-offs for the body contouring results they achieve.

When Will I See My Mommy Makeover Results?

While your results will start to develop immediately following your surgery, you will experience moderate to significant bruising and swelling that may obscure the quality of those results.

Most patients see the majority of their bruising and swelling subside after a few weeks, but some swelling may persist for up to six months. Your results will gradually take shape over that time.

The results of your Mommy Makeover will be long lasting as long as you maintain a stable weight. Weight gain or future pregnancies will alter the quality of the results and may require an additional surgical procedure.

How Much Will My Mommy Makeover Cost in Houston, TX?

Since your Mommy Makeover is customized to you, there is no way to estimate the cost of your surgery until after your consultation with Dr. Kronowitz. There, you will be given an accurate cost estimate that will include the procedure as well as anesthesia fees, surgeon’s fees, and facility fees.
