About Liposuction

Liposuction remains one of the most popular cosmetic procedures; in 2016, surgeons conducted over 230,000 procedures in the United States alone. (1) Liposuction remained in the top 5 most performed procedures in a 2020 report by the American Society of Plastic Surgery. It also boasts low complication rates due to the use of tiny incisions- studies show that the infection rate for this procedure is only 0.1%. (2) Since fat sculpting procedures were developed in the 1970s, researchers have found numerous ways to get patients healing optimally and quicker than ever. In just the past decade, over 50 new devices and techniques have been used to make liposuction more efficient and safe for patients looking to feel renewed confidence and improve their body-image. (3) Dr. Kronowitz has extensive experience with removing subcutaneous fat from the following areas:

  • Abdomen
  • Thighs
  • Hips
  • Flanks
  • Buttocks
  • Back
  • Upper Arms

Candidates for Liposuction

Many patients consider liposuction after pregnancy or weight loss to reduce or eliminate the fat deposits that are resistant to diet and exercise. Candidates for liposuction are non-smokers, close to their ideal weight, have no medical conditions that could affect their ability to heal, and have realistic expectations of their results. They should also have good skin elasticity so that the fat removal process won’t leave loose skin post-surgery. Finally, liposuction is not a weight loss procedure, and it should not be used to replace a healthy diet and exercise routine.

Preparation

Before your procedure, Dr. Kronowitz will run a few blood tests and take an evaluation of your overall health. He will review your medications and supplements in order to advise you on what should be adjusted. For example, you should stop taking blood thinners and anti-inflammatory drugs in order to prevent the risk of excessive bleeding and/or bruising.

If you are a smoker or consume nicotine products, Dr. Kronowitz will require that you quit for a certain length of time to get your blood circulation and healing mechanisms working at their best. Finally, on the day of your appointment consider wearing loose clothing that will be easy to change out of post-procedure. Since you may be tender for several days after, you may want to stock up on comfortable clothing.

Liposuction Procedure Steps

We will first begin the procedure by placing you under general anesthesia for your comfort and safety. Dr. Kronowitz will then inject tumescent fluid into the area that needs sculpting. This fluid is composed of lidocaine to completely numb the subcutaneous tissue and epinephrine to help the fat tissue separate from important underlying structures with ease. Epinephrine also works to shrink blood vessels to keep bleeding to an absolute minimum. He will then make an incision 1.5 to 3 mm in length in order to introduce a long, thin suction device called a cannula.

Fat Transfer

For a fat transfer procedure, Dr. Kronowitz will use tumescent liposuction to harvest fat from areas you wish to contour, but he will purify the fat and reinject it to enhance another area of the body. With this method, you can increase volume in your natural feminine curves, such as in the buttocks and breasts. Since it is your own tissue being used, there is no risk of rejection and the results feel incredibly natural to the touch.

Recovery and Results

Liposuction is an outpatient procedure, and you can return home shortly after your anesthesia wears off. A family member or friend should take charge to ensure that you get home safely, since you won’t be able to drive yourself.

Initially, you can expect to be sore, bruised, and swollen. Your treatment areas may be wrapped with compression garments/dressings that will facilitate the healing process by reducing swelling and promoting circulation. You will have to wear your compression garment for a total of 3 to 5 weeks. You can expedite your recovery further by taking leisurely walks as soon as you feel well enough—you do not want to overexert your body too soon. Most patients require 1 week off of work and their day-to-day activities and 4 to 6 weeks away from any strenuous activity or exercise.

Corresponding & Complementary Procedures

Fat Transfer to the Face

One of the most beneficial uses of liposuction is for fat transfer to the face. Dr. Krnowitz removes excess fat from one area of the body and carefully injecting it into areas of the face that need volume restoration or contouring. This innovative technique not only addresses facial asymmetry but also provides a minimally-invasive, long-lasting alternative to traditional fillers.

Tummy Tuck

This procedure is ideal for patients who have undergone major weight loss and have an extra skin that needs to be removed. It is also an effective treatment for those who’ve experienced diastasis recti, a condition in which the abdominal muscles separate due to pregnancy. Tummy tucks address this issue through the placement of permanent sutures that shape and strengthen the midsection.

Lower Body Lift

A lower body lift may consist of one or more of the following: Brazilian butt lift (BBL), thigh lift, liposuction and a tummy tuck. It is a more comprehensive approach that incorporates fat transfer and skin removal in many areas of the lower body for a more uniform silhouette.

FAQ

Are the results of liposuction permanent?

After you’re fully recovered and no longer have to wear a compression garment, the results you see can be permanent if maintained well with diet and exercise.

Is liposuction painful?

During the actual procedure, you will be under general anesthesia, which means that you will not feel any pain. After the procedure, you will likely feel some discomfort. Any pain you may feel can be alleviated by medication and will dissipate over time.

Will I have scars after my liposuction procedure?

Any scarring from a liposuction procedure will be insignificant and less than a fraction of an inch. Surgeons often find inconspicuous areas to make incisions so they are even more subtle.

How many areas can liposuction treat in one session?

Though there is no single and definite answer to this question, as it really depends on the patient and size of the treatment areas, most liposuction procedures are limited to 3 or 4 different locations. This is to help protect the patient’s safety and minimize recovery time.

Is liposuction a type of weight-loss procedure?

Liposuction isn’t a weight loss procedure because it doesn’t involve modifications to the digestive system. Most patients do not attain significant weight loss, but they will have smoother, slimmer contours in areas where excess fat deposits used to be.
